Horse Racing has thousands of events across the globe, but the most famous ones are the Kentucky Oaks, the Kentucky Derby, the One Thousand Guineas, the Saint Leger, and the Two Thousand Guineas. The Kentucky Oaks is hosted annually in Louisville. It features a selection of 3-year-old thoroughbred horses who race just over a mile at the famous Churchill Downs tack. The event is held one week before the Kentucky Derby and gives $750,000 for 1st place. This particular horse race is one the oldest sports events in the history of the US, attracting tens of thousands of horse racing and gambling fanatics from across the globe to the one-day event. Due to the size of the crowd, the event was postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic and held a few months later. The racing track at Churchill Downs was originally run at 1.5 miles before being shortened to 1.25 miles in 1891. Today, the track measures 1.125 miles and has stayed that way for more than 20 years.
In order to qualify for the Kentucky Oats race, horses and their jockeys must rack up points by winning and placing in other events between the months of September and April. Typically, 14 horses will enter the event based on their point earnings throughout the season. However, a maximum of 18 horses may participate with the last 4 coming from the bottom of the earnings results.
The Kentucky Derby is the 2nd major event that’s considered a classic. It was started in 1875 and occurs every May at the same track, Churchill Downs, which is located in Louisville, KY. The Kentucky Derby is one of the horse racing events that make up the famous Triple Crown. The field is entirely comprised of 3-year-old horses, and because of the point grading system, there are always a couple long shots in the group. If you bet on the race and pick a longshot to win, your odds are often 30-1 or greater, giving you ample chances to earn a great deal of money very quickly if you pick correctly. The jockeys on the horses often weigh less than 150 pounds, allowing the horses to run faster. Eddie Arcaro is one of the winningest jockeys of all-time at Churchill Downs with 5 1st place finishes.
